Will Sominex help you Sleep Better?

Those familiar with the drowsiness caused by the use of Benadryl already know how well Sominex will help them sleep.  Why?  Well, because they contain the exact same primary ingredient.

Sominex Ingredients and Research

Sominex comes in two versions – Original and Maximum Strength.

• Original:  50 mg diphenhydramine (2 tablet dose)
• Maximum Strength:  50 mg diphenhydramine (1 tablet)

Diphenhydramine was originally used to treat cold and allergy symptoms but because of its effect of making the user drowsy is now marketed as a sleep aid.  It does tend to work to some extent but the research in this respect is not extensive.

Sominex Side Effects

Though you’ll probably get drowsy, this doesn’t necessarily guarantee higher-quality sleep.  Many users report feeling excessively “groggy” the next morning.

Sominex Value

Sominex is fairly cheap – selling for around $6 per bottle, but you could probably find cheaper diphenhydramine in generic versions of benadryl or other similar products.

Sominex Bottom Line

If you’re just looking to get drowsy, this will work pretty cheaply for you.  However, I don’t believe it is the best way to get long-term quality sleep patterns.  I see nothing wrong with trying it, but don’t expect a great night’s sleep.
