Jatamansi

Will Jatamansi Help You Sleep Better?

Jatamansi is an herbal remedy that has been around from almost the beginning of time.  It has to be good for something!  It is one of the few herbs that are mentioned in the Bible and they say it appears in some of the historical findings in Egypt, Arabia, Greece and India.  It is been called True Spikenard or Biblical Spikenard or muskroot.  It is grown in the high elevation of the Alpine side of the Himalayan mountains in China and also found in India.  This herb can be dried or used as an oil extract.  But the bottom line is does this work as a sleep aid?  So the investigation continues to see if Jatamansi is worth it when it comes to using it as a sleep aid.

Jatamansi Ingredients and Research

The only main ingredient is this product is the herb jatamansi.   Jatamansi comes from the Valerian plant family.  Valerian is a common ingredient that is found in sleep aid supplements which claim some mild sedative effects on a person.   The jatamansi  herb contains several alkaloids which are chemicals found in plants but only a few have been isolated to study.  Apparently it has been found that the medicinal value is only found in the stem of the plant that lies underground and the root.  The chemicals  in this herb are sesquiterpenes and coumarins.  Sesquiterpenes are hydrocarbons that attract or repel in defense.  Coumarins are sweetly scented compounds that are used in perfumes but may have anti-coagulant properties.

Jatamansi Side Effects

There are no comments on side effects for this product but in my research it says that coumarin is known as a poison in higher doses and can damage the liver and kidneys.  It is even used in some pesticides.  I know I do not want to take anything that is a poison that is used in a pesticide!  There are no controls or research on dosage for humans so caution must be used.  They say anyone with liver damage, kidney damage, cancer and epilepsy should avoid it.

Jatamansi Value

This supplement looks like it is manufactured by various companies that are evasive on the internet.  I have seen powder by one company sold for $6.95 and pills by a website that sells them for $18.95 for 100 tablets.

Jatamansi Bottom Line

The first concern is the manufacturers do not have their own website and it does not even give you the name of who manufactures the pills.  I see RED flags all over the place.  This must be a useful herb since it has been around for centuries.  However, it is rarely marketed as a sleep aid for insomnia.  The herb has been used in perfumes and pesticides . .  I guess I would just sprinkle it on my flowers to keep the bugs away!  I would not waste my money on a herbal supplement that has no known website,  no customer testimonials and no information on the company that produces this product.  Save your money and check out what Sleep-aids.com recommends
